In a deeply upsetting incident, a 21-year-old female MBBS student – identified as Jyoti Krushnakumar Meena, hailing from Sikar, Rajasthan – was found dead in her college hostel at B.J. Government Medical College (BJMC), Pune. The incident occurred late Tuesday night, and preliminary investigations point to suicide as the likely cause.
According to police reports:
- Meena, who was in her second year of MBBS, left the hostel around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, prompting concern when she failed to return.
- Her roommates filed a missing person report around midnight, triggering a search.
- She was discovered hanging in a spare girl’s hostel room.
- She was pronounced dead on arrival at Sassoon General Hospital.
Authorities recovered a two-page note at the scene in which Meena described battling depression, anxiety, and other health issues. She expressed gratitude and apologies to her parents, reflecting profound emotional distress
Dr. Rajesh Karyakarte, Officiating Dean, noted that initial investigations suggest the motive was personal rather than academic. A report has been submitted to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER).
This tragic event has brought renewed attention to the urgent need for better mental health support and suicide prevention within medical colleges.
Senior inspector Gaikwad said they have registered an accidental death and are continuing with their investigation.
Her parents told us that she had been facing depression and anxiety issues since her school days and had received treatment from psychiatrists,” the officer said
May the departed soul rest in peace.
