WB NEET UG Counselling 2025 Suspended; Over 11,000 Students Waiting

The NEET UG counselling in West Bengal has hit a pause button. On August 18, 2025, the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) announced that the admission process for MBBS and BDS courses is kept in abeyance till further notice.

This sudden suspension has left thousands of medical aspirants in confusion and stress, especially those who were getting ready for the first round of counselling.

Why has counselling stopped?

The issue is linked to caste certificate verification. After a recent Calcutta High Court order, the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) has asked all SC, ST and OBC candidates to re-upload their caste certificates between August 18 and August 21 (11:59 PM) on the official site.

Earlier, only OBC students were asked to submit documents by August 7. But since the matter wasn’t resolved, now every reserved category student has to re-upload. This has delayed both the WBJEE 2025 merit list and NEET UG medical counselling.

Who is affected?

As per WBMCC, about 11,178 students were included in the revised merit list for 85% state quota seats. These students were supposed to start choice filling for MBBS and BDS seats in government and private colleges.

Now, everything is on hold until the state sorts out the reservation issue.

Politics adds more pressure

The delay has also triggered political reactions. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has warned that if the matter drags on, his party will start statewide protests. This means the issue is not just academic anymore, but also political.

What students should do right now

  • Re-upload caste certificates (if applicable) before August 21.
  • Keep checking wbjeeb.nic.in and wbmcc.nic.in for official notices.
  • Keep your documents ready so you don’t face last-minute trouble when counselling restarts.

At the moment, more than 11,000 NEET aspirants in West Bengal are in waiting mode. The next clear update is expected only after August 21, once the certificate window closes.
