The total cost of MBBS is much more than the yearly tuition fee. To build a real budget, add tuition for every fee period, other college fees, hostel and mess, travel, and any deposits. Then work out a second number: the cash you need on joining day.
Do this before choice filling. A seat you cannot pay for is not a real option. The examples below use published 2026–27 fee tables. Your own college, quota and category decide your bill.
On this page
- Example 1: A first-year bill at Amrita Kochi
- Example 2: Why you should not multiply by 5.5
- Sort the money into four groups
- Cash needed now vs total cost
- Make a joining-day payment plan
- Questions to ask the college
- Final check before your family approves a choice
Example 1: A first-year bill at Amrita Kochi
Amrita School of Medicine, Kochi, publishes this general-category MBBS fee table for 2026–27:
| Fee head | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition (per year) | ₹25,00,000 |
| Other fees (first year) | ₹1,81,250 |
| Hostel and mess (first year) | ₹94,000 |
| Admission processing charge (non-refundable) | ₹5,000 |
| Total of these four heads | ₹27,80,250 |
Source: Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham MBBS programme page, 2026–27 Kochi fee table.
So the first-year bill is ₹2,80,250 more than the tuition alone. A family that plans for “₹25 lakh a year” will fall short in year one.
The same page gives total tuition of ₹1,12,50,000 for the course, which is ₹25 lakh × 4.5 years. That figure is tuition only. Other fees are charged every year, and hostel and mess are extra.
The page’s wording on when the full course fee is due is not fully clear. Ask the college to confirm in writing how much you must pay before reporting.
Always check the latest official notice before acting.
Example 2: Why you should not multiply by 5.5
Nitte’s 2026–27 general-category fee schedule lists MBBS at its Mangaluru campus as a 5.5-year course. Here is the academic fee for each year:
| Year | Academic fee |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | ₹20,14,500 |
| Year 2 | ₹20,08,000 |
| Year 3 | ₹20,08,000 |
| Year 4 | ₹20,08,000 |
| Year 5 (half year) | ₹10,04,000 |
| Total | ₹90,42,500 |
Source: Nitte (Deemed to be University), Fee Structure for Undergraduate Programs under General Category 2026–27, MBBS Mangaluru row.
Year 1 is higher because it includes a university fee and an exam fee on top of ₹20 lakh tuition. No academic fee is listed for the internship part of the course.
Worked example. If you multiply the first-year fee by 5.5, you get ₹1,10,79,750. The real academic total is ₹90,42,500. That is a difference of over ₹20 lakh. Always read every year’s column instead of guessing. Hostel and living costs still need their own rows.
Sort the money into four groups
| Group | Examples | How to budget it |
|---|---|---|
| College fees | Tuition, exam fee, university fee | Use each period in the fee schedule |
| Living costs | Hostel, mess, travel, books | Use the actual billing period |
| One-time costs | Admission charge, equipment, moving | Add once, at the right stage |
| Deposits | Counselling security deposit, college caution money | Count as cash paid now; track any refund separately |
A security deposit is money you pay during counselling that may be refunded or forfeited (kept by the authority), depending on the rules. Our MCC fees and security deposit guide explains the MCC amounts and refund rules.
Find out whether hostel and mess are compulsory. Ask what the charge covers and for how many months. A hostel fee can cover a different period from tuition.
Cash needed now vs total cost
A deposit uses your cash today, even if you may get it back later. So keep two totals:
- Cash needed now: everything you must pay by the joining deadline, including deposits.
- Net course cost: what you finally spend after any refund comes back.
Sample. The college bill due at joining is ₹6 lakh. A refundable deposit is ₹50,000. You need ₹6.5 lakh ready on the day. If the full deposit comes back later, your net cost for these two items is ₹6 lakh.
These are sample amounts, not a real college quote. The point is simple: never count an expected refund as money you have for a bill due tomorrow.
Make a joining-day payment plan
List every amount due before or at joining. Add who you pay, how they accept payment, and the deadline.
| Payment | Due date | Where the money comes from | Proof to keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| College fees | From the joining notice | Family funds or confirmed loan release | Official fee receipt |
| Hostel or mess advance | From the hostel notice | Funds ready by that date | Hostel receipt |
| Travel and stay | Your travel plan | Separate travel budget | Booking records |
Ask your bank about daily transfer limits well before the last day.
If you are taking an education loan, check when the bank can send money to the college. A loan that is “sanctioned” (approved) is not the same as money “disbursed” (actually paid out). Plan around the disbursement date.
Keep a small buffer for costs you are unsure about. Name each item in the buffer. Do not hide a large unknown college charge under “miscellaneous”.
Questions to ask the college
Ask clear questions before choice filling:
- Does this fee include exam and university charges?
- Is hostel compulsory? Is mess included?
- Which fees go up after year one?
- How much must I pay before reporting?
Ask for answers for your course, batch and quota. A general brochure may show another programme’s fee.
Also check the cost of leaving the course. A bond can require you to pay remaining fees if you leave. Read our MBBS bond checklist before you sign. To compare different college types, see deemed vs private MBBS colleges. For state examples, see our Punjab MBBS fee guide and Haryana MBBS fee guide.
Final check before your family approves a choice
- The fee row matches your batch, quota and category.
- Every fee period is on your sheet.
- Hostel, mess and travel have their own rows.
- You know which deposits may come back, and on what terms.
- The money can reach the college before the deadline.
- You have read the bond and exit charges.
- You have both totals: cash needed now and the full course cost.
Keep the official fee schedule with your worksheet. If a later notice changes a fee, update that row and keep both versions.
How we prepared this: We used Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s 2026–27 MBBS fee table for Kochi and Nitte’s 2026–27 general-category undergraduate fee schedule. All totals were recalculated from those tables. Facts were last checked on 17 October 2026. AI tools helped with drafting.
