Sikkim MBBS Counselling 2026: State Quota, SMIMS and HLSGMC Guide

No single body runs Sikkim MBBS counselling. The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) fills the state quota MBBS and BDS seats. It works under the Education Department, Government of Sikkim. Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) runs its own counselling for its General, Northeast and Management seats. MCC, on the other hand, fills the 15% All India Quota seats in government colleges.

Sikkim NEET UG 2026 update (20 October): The DTE held state quota counselling on 7 September 2026. SMIMS has finished three rounds. Now, the Health and Family Welfare Department has issued a new notice dated 14 October 2026. It covers MBBS Society Seats at Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College (HLSGMC), Gangtok. The notice revised the Society seat fee to Rs 20,00,000. It also points to a new counselling schedule on the college website. First check that schedule. Then apply only if you can pay the fee.

Who runs Sikkim MBBS counselling

Sikkim now has two medical colleges. First, HLSGMC has NMC permission to admit 100 MBBS students a year from 2026-27. It started its first session on 18 September 2026. Second, SMIMS is the older private college in Gangtok.

Know your seat route: Find out which route your seat comes from. A DTE state nomination, an SMIMS seat (General, Northeast or Management) and an HLSGMC Society seat are separate admission routes. For HLSGMC, download its current fee notice and Bond Annexure 5 before you pay.

You register separately for each route. For example, an SMIMS application does not enter you in the DTE state quota counselling. Likewise, neither one creates an MCC registration. Our MCC counselling guide covers the national route. For both colleges, see MBBS colleges in Sikkim.

HLSGMC Society seat round (October 2026)

HLSGMC is Sikkim’s first government medical college. The Government of India and the Government of Sikkim set it up together.

The first call for Society Seats opened on 23 September 2026. It closed on 30 September 2026 at 12 noon. That call listed 5 Society Seats. Then, on 14 October 2026, the Health and Family Welfare Department issued a fresh notice. Here is what it says:

  • Only NEET UG 2026 qualified candidates can apply.
  • The revised fee for Society Seats is Rs 20,00,000.
  • A new counselling schedule is on the HLSGMC website.

The college’s website carries the new HLSGMC fee notice and its admission bond. For Society seats, confirm these points separately:

  • Is the reported ₹20 lakh charged each year or for the whole course?
  • Are lodging and deposits extra?
  • What does the exact eligibility notice say?

Sikkim state quota MBBS: who can apply

First, you must qualify NEET UG 2026. The qualifying scores are:

  • General/EWS: 50th percentile, 213 marks
  • General PwD: 45th percentile, 194 marks
  • SC/ST/OBC and their PwD: 40th percentile, 177 marks

Also, NMC rules require Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English in Class 12.

Sikkim Subject Certificate and COI rules for NEET

For state quota seats, the DTE asks for a Sikkim Subject Certificate or a Certificate of Identification (COI). Either the candidate’s or the father’s certificate works.

Your situationWhat to check
You hold a Sikkim Subject Certificate or COIBring the original to counselling
Your father holds one, you do notThe notice accepts the father’s certificate
You are from the “Others” communityResidential certificate, mother’s COI, trade licence in father’s name, or a parent’s employment certificate
You are from another Northeast stateNot Sikkim quota; look at the SMIMS Northeast category
You are from outside the NortheastSMIMS General or Management, or MCC

For example, suppose Pema’s father holds a COI but Pema does not. She can still use her father’s COI for state quota counselling. However, she must also bring her community certificate and other papers.

Documents for state quota counselling

The DTE asked candidates to attend in person on 7 September. Also, they had to bring originals and one set of attested copies:

  • Sikkim Subject Certificate or COI (candidate or father)
  • Valid community certificate
  • NEET UG 2026 scorecard
  • Class 12 mark sheet
  • Birth certificate
  • BPL certificate from DESME, if applicable
  • Benchmark disability certificate, if applicable
  • Sports certificate, if applicable

Reservation in Sikkim state quota

The DTE allots seats on NEET merit and the state reservation policy. The Education Department lists this split for state quota college seats:

CategoryShare
Bhutia and Lepcha20%
OBC (State List)20%
OBC (Central List)20%
Scheduled Tribe13%
Merit10%
Scheduled Caste7%
Primitive Tribe5%
Others5%

However, the exact MBBS seats per category depend on the roster. The department publishes the roster point allocation on its portal. Our state quota counselling guide explains how to read such rules.

SMIMS MBBS admission 2026

SMIMS runs online counselling for its General, Northeast and Management seats. Its 11 August 2026 seat matrix lists 32 General, 32 Northeast and 6 Management seats. Also, SMIMS posted a notice on revised seat intake for 2026-27. Read it before you fill choices.

The process worked like this:

  • Apply online on the SMU portal and pay the Rs 1,000 fee.
  • Upload your NEET scorecard, score and rank by the deadline.
  • In each round, open the Counselling tab and select your categories.
  • Submit, lock and save the confirmation.

Worked example. Suppose a student from Assam is NEET qualified. She can select both General and Northeast at SMIMS. Then she can add Management only if the fee fits her budget. A seat you cannot pay for is not a backup.

How the rounds work

RoundWhat happened in 2026
SMIMS Round 1Choice filling 16–17 August; result 24 August
SMIMS Round 2Fresh registration 6–7 September; allotment 12 September
SMIMS Round 3Management only; 2 seats; result 6 October
DTE state quotaOne in-person counselling on 7 September
HLSGMC Society seatsSeptember call, then the 14 October notice

Each round has its own notice, so read it before you register. Also, MCC rules do not apply to Sikkim state or SMIMS seats. For instance, MCC’s free exit and deposit rules do not carry over here. Our counselling rounds guide explains how rounds generally work.

Sikkim MBBS fees

SMIMS published these fees for 2026:

ItemAmount
General tuitionRs 18,70,000 a year
Management tuitionRs 35,20,000 a year
Hostel (triple sharing)Rs 45,000 a year (see note below)
Caution deposit (refundable)Rs 25,000
Registration fee (non-refundable)Rs 10,000

SMIMS says the course fee stays the same in later years. It collects the fee in two instalments. However, the instalment figures in the notice do not add up to the annual fee. SMIMS has also posted a revised hostel fee notice for 2026-27. Because of this, confirm both amounts with the admission office.

HLSGMC’s official admission site now shows a 2026–27 fee-structure update. Read that document and the college’s admission instructions before joining. The 14 October notice gives a separate fee for Society seats. That fee is not necessarily the fee for an ordinary state-quota seat. Check your exact quota before you pay.

Central pool seats and bond

Sikkim also gets Central Pool MBBS and BDS seats in colleges in other states. Under the Union Health Ministry scheme, only children of permanent residents and certain government employees can apply. In addition, the scheme asks states to make these students serve in the state for a set period. However, we could not find the 2026 Sikkim notice with the exact bond terms. Read the state’s Central Pool notice before you accept.

HLSGMC’s official website also lists an “HLSGMC Bond – Annexure 5” among its admission forms. That means an official state-college bond document does exist. Download and read the actual bond. Take its service period and penalty from the signed annexure or a current government order. Do not copy them from another state’s rules. Central-pool nominees must also check the rules of their allotted institution.

After allotment

  • Check the college, category and fee on your allotment letter.
  • Pay the fee before the deadline and keep the receipt.
  • Report with original documents.
  • Ask in writing about hostel, deposits and any bond.

Our reporting checklist helps with the joining stage.
