Nagaland MBBS Counselling 2026: NIMSR, Central Pool Seats and DTE Process

The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Nagaland, runs Nagaland MBBS counselling. It works under the Higher and Technical Education Department. DTE fills the state quota seats at NIMSR, Kohima. It also nominates students to MBBS seats that other states and the Centre give Nagaland. MCC, on the other hand, fills the 15% All India Quota seats, plus AIIMS, JIPMER and deemed universities.

Nagaland NEET UG 2026 update (20 October): The Directorate of Technical Education published its NEET state merit and rejected lists in August. It released the state-quota seat allocation on 24 August. Then, on 9 September, it published a list of state-nominated medical candidates. The current DTE circulars list shows no new MBBS round for October. If you hold a nomination, follow the admission rules and deadlines of the institution named on your letter.

A State Common Selection Board makes the selections. The Minister or Advisor for Higher and Technical Education chairs it. Its members include the Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare and the Director of NIMSR. The Director of Technical Education is the Member Secretary. However, all forms, lists and nomination letters come from DTE. In practice, you deal with DTE, not the Health Department.

You apply separately for MCC and for the state. For example, your MCC registration does not put you on the DTE list. Our MCC counselling guide covers the national route. For colleges, see MBBS colleges in Nagaland.

How Nagaland state quota MBBS admission works

Nagaland MBBS counselling has no online choice-filling portal. Instead, it works like this:

  • You submit a paper application form to DTE in Kohima.
  • You list your course preferences on that form, such as MBBS, BDS or BAMS.
  • DTE prepares a state merit list from NEET scores.
  • The Selection Board allots seats by merit, preference and the state reservation policy.
  • Selected candidates collect a nomination letter from DTE.
  • Then they report to the allotted college.

NIMSR first set MBBS admission for 10 and 11 September 2026. Then it posted a revised notice on 8 September 2026. Check that notice for the final dates. DTE also posted a state counselling notice for MBBS and allied courses in August 2026.

Seats available to Nagaland students

NIMSR, Kohima. This is Nagaland’s first medical college. It started in 2023 with 100 MBBS seats. In 2023–24, 85 seats went to Nagaland candidates and 15 to the All India Quota. The 2026 seat matrix shows the current split.

Central pool seats. The Centre gives Nagaland 42 MBBS seats a year under the deficient-state quota. The High Court cited this figure in 2025. These seats are in colleges outside the state. For instance, DTE’s 2026 seat list includes colleges in Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

North-East colleges. DTE’s 2026 nomination schedule also covers RIMS Imphal, NEGRIHMS Shillong, Assam Medical College, Jorhat Medical College and Government Medical College Agartala.

The defence quota is separate. The courts have held that the two do not overlap. Our seat matrix guide explains how to read seat lists.

Who can apply

First, you must qualify NEET UG 2026. The qualifying scores are:

  • General and EWS: 50th percentile, 213 marks.
  • General PwD: 45th percentile, 194 marks.
  • SC, ST, OBC and their PwD: 40th percentile, 177 marks.

DTE’s 2026 rejected list shows how strict this is. For example, it removed candidates who scored below 177. It also rejected students who failed Class 12 Biology, missed NEET or had a gender mismatch on the scorecard.

Also, you must not have used a state reserved seat before. DTE rejected several 2026 applicants who had already taken a state seat through JEE or CUET.

Nagaland domicile rules for NEET

Nagaland’s state seats are for indigenous inhabitants of the state. As a result, DTE’s form asks for an ST certificate and an Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland certificate. It also asks for a Backward Tribe certificate, if you have one.

Your situationWhat to check
Indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland with ST certificateBoth certificates are valid and match your NEET details
Belong to a notified Backward TribeYour Backward Tribe certificate is valid
Not indigenous, but parents work or are posted in NagalandAsk DTE in writing before you apply
Parent in the defence servicesUse the separate defence quota, not Nagaland’s central pool seats
Took a state seat earlier through JEE or CUETDTE rejected such applicants in 2026

The courts have now settled the central pool rule. In 2025, an Army officer’s daughter challenged the state’s 9 September 2021 eligibility notification. A single judge quashed it in August 2025. However, a Gauhati High Court Division Bench upheld it on 23 October 2025. The Supreme Court then dismissed the appeal in February 2026. It also dismissed a review plea in April 2026.

Our guide on state quota counselling explains how to read such rules.

Filling preferences: a worked example

Asha has an ST rank that may get MBBS but is close to the cut-off. She would also accept BDS. Her list could be:

  • MBBS
  • BDS
  • BAMS

If she wrote only MBBS, she might get nothing. However, she should not list a course she would never join. Our college predictor can help you judge your chances.

How AIQ and Nagaland seats affect each other

MCC rules do not apply to DTE nominations. For example, MCC’s free exit and upgrade rules do not carry over to Nagaland MBBS counselling. Also, DTE has not published a rule on how an AIQ seat affects a state nomination. So, if you hold both offers, ask DTE before you give up either one. Our counselling rounds guide explains how MCC rounds work.

Nagaland MBBS fees and bond

DTE charged a Rs 500 form fee in 2025. However, NIMSR has posted no 2026 fee notice. Its last fee notice was for 2024–25. Also, central pool colleges follow their own fee rules. Ask your college in writing for tuition, hostel, deposit and exam charges.

We also found no official 2026 notice on a service bond or exit penalty for Nagaland state seats. However, host colleges and states may set their own bonds. Read the admission terms of your allotted college. Our MBBS bond checklist lists the clauses to check.

After you get a nomination letter

  • Collect the letter from DTE on your given date and time.
  • Check your name, course and college.
  • Read the college’s notice for the reporting date.
  • Report with original documents, the letter and fees.

A nomination is not a seat yet: Your DTE nomination does not complete your admission. Check the college and date on your letter. Then get the host college’s tuition and bond forms. Some central pool seats mean you report outside Nagaland.

Our reporting checklist helps with the joining stage.

Common questions

Is there online Nagaland MBBS counselling?

No. DTE uses a paper form, a merit list and nomination letters. You collect the letter in person in Kohima.

Can a student from another state get a Nagaland state quota MBBS seat?

Generally, no. The seats are for indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland. Also, the courts have ruled that wards of defence staff must use the defence quota instead. If your family works in Nagaland, ask DTE before you apply.

How many central pool MBBS seats does Nagaland get?

Nagaland gets 42 MBBS seats a year under the central pool deficient-state quota. It also gets four BDS seats. DTE fills both through its own nomination process.
